I have read that all the lakes have bluegill. However, my son has special needs and can get bored of fishing quickly. Where would you recommend around Dallas/Ft. Worth for an amazing day of bluegill with bass for dad to catch?

Hi Jeff,

Yes, pretty much all lakes have some bluegill, but the biggest and most plentiful, plus eager to bite are those we found at Boatwright.  We caught numerous 1+ lb bluegill throughout the day. Massive. You can catch them right off the dock at the boat house, or anywhere along the shore. My son was catching them on tiny bits of slim jim on a tiny hook.  I caught several on a fly rod, wooly booger.  We have a fishing report on May 30, 2019 you can see pics.  That lake has a ton of small and eager bass as well.  Wont get bored there. You might wait till it warms a bit.  The bite is going to be slow this time of year most places.  A warm sunny afternoon usually gets the bite to pickup a bit.

Jeff I'm not sure what area your located.  If DFWi would recommend Six O ranch in Cleburne.  Covered dock, pontoon boat. ( but you will need trolling motor and battery, I would recommend a 55 pounds of thrust.)  catch lots of bluegills right from dock.  A small number 8 hook, bobber and cheap loaf of white fresh bread.  Make small bread balls and toss a few in to get the feeding frenzy going.  Plus you can catch Bass from the dock.  For bass I would recommend plastics, wacky, or  flukes in watermelon seed or red shad.  Also if he wants to cast a lure get him a bettle spin ¼ oz in white. I would not recommend walking around too much as this is rattlesnake country.  The covered dock is nice on hot days. This area can get windy so that's why I say a 55 to move that mini pontoon. Check some of my previous reports and my brothers Bass from the Dock in 2019.

Thank you Robert! I have heard of Six O Ranch and have been wanting to get out there for a couple of years now. That’s a lot closer to home. I am up in Wylie (North off Garland/Richardson area).

You have two options to get there. One is thru Dallas to hwy 67 the other is toll road to 30 W to Chisholm Trail Toll Road.  I think the Chisholm Trail toll road is a better route.   Less speed traps.  On 67 the speed limit keeps on going up and down as you enter and leave different towns. The Chisholm I think starts at 55 mph then goes to 60 mph and then 70 mph.  Only radar I've ever seen is right in Fort Worth.  IMO Six O fishes better starting in April as there is a lot of deep water and colder months those fish are deep.  Also another tip  get on google maps and locate the lake. It is in two counties.  From the dock the cove directly across is sometimes good. But look across from the dock on the map and the second cove you can see the old dam. Good fishing on both sides of the dam. Another productive area is south at the dam. Cast to the dam and slowly twitch it back. One warning lots of timber just below surface so go slow until you figure it out.  And Yes the big coppernose Bluegills are at the dock all year long. Remember the white bread (fresh and doughy)  Give yourself an hour and a half to get there. Have fun.

Hi Jeff, Collinsville Boren Lake is a great option, there is a huge population of bluegill, especially in the boat house.  We’ve seen the owner feed them and the quantity and size was impressive; when he feeds you can just drop a hook with no bait and catch them ????.  Good luck!
